32% or more of new cars sold in UK by manufacturers this year have to be zero-emission, meaning electric which could be battery or hydrogen fuel-cell-battery. The percentage will then rise each year, getting to 100% by 2035. Vans will be start lower, at 10% this year. Penalties of £15000 per emitting vehicle above the allowance will be charged by the government. Right now, the percentage of new cars which are zero-emission is around 16%, so changes must happen in coming months. This is an exciting new mandate which will lead to zero car emissions for new vehicles in 11 years, but unfortunately the existing penetration is only about 2% zero-emission which somehow must also be stopped. It will be interesting to see if hydrogen can catch up with baleful batteries.
