Every day there is a publication about battery breakthrough. Today is the solid state battery hype (Inside Clean Energy <newsletters@insideclimatenews.org>) which tells us that the 600 mile range car is almost here, using new solid state batteries that contain a solid electrolyte rather than liquid. But the fact is that the hydrogen-fuel-cell-battery-electric car can already do 600 mile range. For example, my Mirai from Toyota does 400 miles now using 6kg of hydrogen, so inserting another 3kg cylinder will take it to 600miles with a weight increase of only 60kg. The battery prophets do not tell us the weight of the 600mile solid state battery required for the pure BEV battery car. Probably about 1 ton. I think they are predicting the 3ton automobile. Remember the Mirai also fills in 5 minutes; the 600 mile battery car will require around 200kWh of energy which will need long-time charging and expensive new infrastructure. My Mirai already has 200kWh of stored energy in its present hydrogen tanks!
