Sunfire announced in April that its large SOEC (Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell) plant has now been installed at the Neste refinery in Rotterdam, and is being commissioned. It is the largest of its kind at 2.6MW and operates at 850 Celsius, making use of available heat and steam to produce green hydrogen at about 40kWh/kg, better than PEM electrolysis which needs about 50 kWh/kg. This is a major breakthrough, funded by EU, allowing the most efficient production of green hydrogen at low cost in future. Companies like Topsoe in Denmark and Ceres in UK are competing to advance this technology.
