Last Friday 13th December, the 138 page plan for UK clean power by 2030 was revealed with imposing targets:
Offshore Wind 43-50 GW
Onshore Wind 27-29 GW
Solar Power 45-47 GW
Hydrogen Storage + CCUS 4-6GW
Annual investment £40billion
The key obstacles like the National Grid and Planning Problems have been identified
Stop the GRID Queue for connection, a huge issue at 739GW
Get Planning permissions sorted. NIMBYs have to be chopped.
Upgrade the out-of-date electricity market that penalises UK citizens but rewards off-shore fat-cats by delivering the most expensive electricity on the planet.
Address short-term storage like Lithium batteries which are ten times more expensive than Hydrogen
Arrange 40-50 GW of long-term storage ie Hydrogen, CCUS power stations and pumped hydro
Improve Energy Industries by injecting more skills and optimised supply chains
Hydrogen is maybe not the most important innovation, but is mentioned more than 60 times, because it can be applied to all applications like Industry, transport, buildings, cavern-storage and pipe-grids. The National Wealth Fund of £5.8bn is a great incentive for new ideas and profits that beat the present bloated National Grid.
Remember, this plan is one of the 5 key Missions emphasised by Keir Starmer in the Election Paperwork. It will surely have major downstream benefits if large companies grasp the opportunities now.
