In 2024, the installed capacity of China wind and solar generators has overtaken coal, reaching 1200GW, which was not expected until 2030. Of course, Wind/Solar fluctuates while coal is generating constantly, so the energy produced by coal is still ahead. Because there is insufficient energy storage in China, much of the renewable power is curtailed, as in UK where about 20% is lost because the grid cannot handle it. Hydrogen should play a big part in overcoming this problem because it can store massive amounts of energy in underground salt caverns. https://www.ciphernews.com/articles/china-hit-its-wind-and-solar-goal-six-years-early/
