Driving North on the M 1 near Nottingham you can see, on the right, the huge coalfired power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar which was run by EON. This is the last month because decommissioning starts on 30th September 2024. Such a huge 2GW generator, burning 5 million tons of coal every year, plus 40 million tons of water, built in 1963 and commissioned in 1968 by CEGB, the long forgotten National Electricity Company, will take some shifting, marking a big milestone in UK history because this is the last UK coal-fired-power-station. May it be replaced by Wind/Solar/Hydrogen. The 2007 environmental activists that protested about global warming due to coal burning were successful at last.
